New York, June 4, 2010—Kylie Minogue, Ricky Martin, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Cyndi Lauper, Estelle, Kelly Rowland, Simon Doonan, Cheyenne Jackson, Marc Jacobs, Lance Bass, Zoe Saldana, and amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole were among those who came out last night to launch amfAR’s Inspiration Gala at the New York Public Library in New York City.

The event, benefitting the foundation’s AIDS research programs, was the first in a series that will also take place in Paris and Los Angeles later this year, celebrating all aspects of men’s style.  Josh Wood Productions produced the affair, wherein guests wore fashions inspired by the gala’s “Black Tie/Black Leather” design theme. Piaget and M•A•C Cosmetics sponsored the event, B&B Italia contributed décor throughout the library, and Jeff Leathem created the floral installations.

Kylie Minogue, the international pop star and style icon who is preparing to release her eleventh studio album, hosted the gala at the New York Public Library. Ms. Minogue presented the amfAR Awards of Inspiration to Ricky Martin and Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Mr. Martin was honored for his extensive philanthropic endeavors through the Ricky Martin Foundation, including constant advocacy for the health and welfare of children around the globe.  Accepting his award, Mr. Martin dedicated it to a young HIV-positive Cambodian girl who he had met through his outreach work against human trafficking, vowing to take the award back to Cambodia for her.

Mr. Gaultier, honored for his lifetime contributions to menswear design and for his enduring humanitarian spirit, received a rousing standing ovation when he took the stage to accept his award.  He spoke about losing his boyfriend to AIDS 20 years ago, and emphasized the importance of safe sex, noting that “the most beautiful outfit of the century is the one that protects – it is the condom.”

Global leaders in menswear design presented original “Black Tie/Black Leather” looks in a runway show sponsored by Wilhemina Models.  Wilhemina flew 52 of their top models from around the world in to New York for the occasion, including Andres Segura, Tyson Ballou, Oriol Elcacho, Ben Hill, Alex Lundqvist, Noah Mills, Enrique Palacios, RJ, Adam Senn, Marlon Teixeira, and Josh Wald. Grammy Award winning singer and rapper Estelle performed a special DJ set during the runway show.

Designers that donated runway looks included Band of Outsiders, Neil Barrett, John Bartlett, Michael Bastian, Bess, Bottega Veneta, Thom Browne, Richard Chai, Kenneth Cole, Dolce & Gabanna, DSquared, Tom Ford, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Robert Geller, Tim Hamilton, Hugo Boss, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein Collection, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Rick Owens, Prada, Trussardi, Viktor & Rolf, Y3, and Yves Saint Laurent.  Models wearing amfAR honoree Jean-Paul Gaultier’s looks were outfitted with Piaget watches. M•A•C cosmetics were also donated for the runway presentation.

Simon Doonan served as auctioneer, helping to auction off many one-of-a-kind items, with proceeds benefitting amfAR.  Kylie Minogue also generously contributed to the live auction, offering up a chance to join her as her guest for the Watermill Center’s “Last Song of Summer” event in the Hamptons.  The package also included a two-night stay at Vanderbilt Hall in Newport, Rhode Island, and a Newport Harbor cruise on a private yacht.  When a bidding war broke out, Ms. Minogue jumped up on her chair and offered to double the package, selling it to two lucky bidders.

To close the night, M•A•C Cosmetics President John Demsey introduced Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, actress, and M•A•C Viva Glam Spokesperson Cyndi Lauper, who gave an impassioned performance of her hits “Just Your Fool” and “True Colors”.  Kelly Rowland and Estelle joined Ms. Lauper for an impromptu rendition of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”  The three acclaimed performers had the rapt crowd on their feet for a 15-minute riff on the classic song.

The Paris Inspiration Gala will be held on June 25, 2010, and Los Angeles event will be held in October 2010.
