amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research

In Memoriam: Natasha Richardson

March 19, 2009— amfAR mourns the sudden, tragic loss of the talented stage and screen actor and much loved amfAR Trustee Natasha Richardson.

Natasha Richardson joined amfAR’s board of trustees in September 2006.  Most recently she was a featured speaker at the Foundation’s annual New York Gala fundraiser on February 12, 2009.  A dedicated AIDS advocate, Ms. Richardson generously contributed her time and resources to amfAR over more than 15 years.  In 1999, she spearheaded Unforgettable: Fashion of the Oscars, an auction of Oscar dresses that raised more than $1.5 million for AIDS research.

“Natasha was an eloquent and persuasive spokesperson for amfAR,” said Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole. “Her unique combination of passion, grace, and intelligence made her the perfect ambassador for the fight against AIDS.”

For Ms. Richardson, HIV/AIDS was personal. Her father, the British film director Tony Richardson, died of AIDS-related causes in 1991.  But her commitment to the cause was driven equally by her unfailing compassion and humanity.

Ms. Richardson’s service to AIDS organizations in the United States included work with Bailey House, Elton John AIDS Foundation, God's Love We Deliver, and Mothers' Voices.  In the United Kingdom, she was involved in the Aids Crisis Trust and National Aids Trust, for which she was an ambassador.  In November 2000, she was honored with amfAR's Award of Courage.

“Our hearts go out to Natasha’s family,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost. “This is a catastrophic loss for them, and it’s a terrible loss for amfAR and the fight against AIDS. She will be greatly missed by the HIV/AIDS community worldwide.”

 Condolences

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Natasha Richardson.  I have been a fan for many years and admired her for her devotion to the fight of AIDS.   My thoughts and prayers are with Liam and her boys and the rest of her family.  May they find strength in the love and memories of Natasha during this very difficult time.  My heart goes out to all who loved her; she was a shining star who was taken away from us far too soon.

In deepest sympathy,

I just wanted to send my care and sympathies along for such a classy, talented and vibrant woman.I can't believe this has happened and am so sad.

I only knew of her when I saw her film, "Asylum" with Marton Csokas and loved her acting in that. It was after that, that I stayed  interested in her career and efforts with AMFAR. She also appears to have a close family as well, and I'm very sad for them too through their grief.

Praying for you all, she will be greatly missed by many.

In sadness,
Rebecca

The sudden and tragic loss of Natasha Richardson is a great one.  She was not only a wonderful entertainer/actress, but a wonderful person as well.  Thoughts and condolences are with her husband, children and the rest of her family and friends.  She will be missed.

My heartfelt sympathy to Liam, Michael, Daniel and her entire family.    What a beautiful woman and what a tragic loss.   My those of us who care deeply for AmFar and the fight against HIV/AIDS continue her legacy to this cause as best we can.

Natasha was known in our home from our favorite movie, The Parent Trap.  After seeing that movie I learned more about her; her movies, family, amfAR.  In that one movie she just glowed!  Such a presence, that even my 8 year old daughter could not miss!  I can not believe I knew so little about her!  Today, I cannot believe such a talented, gracious, giving woman is gone. I am deeply saddened by her passing.

My heart and prayers go out desperately to her family.
Ann

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Natasha Richardson. My daughter Sofia and I have been fans for years and admired her for her devotion to the fight of AIDS.  Our  thoughts and prayers are with her family.  May they find strength in the love and memories of Natasha during this very difficult time.

In deepest sympathy,

The news of Natasha’s death is positively devastating. She was an actress of the highest caliber. The arts, and the larger society will glitter noticeably less in her absence. The effort to end HIV/AIDS has lost one of its kindest and most generous crusaders. My best prayers, thoughts and wishes are extended to all of Natasha’s immediate family, as well as to her extended family in spirit, profession, and service.

Best,
Terence

I want to send my very deepest sympathy to an actor I admire so much, Liam Neeson, for his horrendous loss, to her sons, her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, and all who knew and loved her. I didn't know her too well, but she seemed a wonderful woman, and I so mourn the loss of a great person, and this sudden, shocking loss to her poor family, is too much to bear. She is to be saluted for her work, that I discoverd reading on the website, and we cannot lose people like her.

May God comfort them all.

Peace,
Connie

She came from an accomplished  theatre family, had a wonderful career, was blessed with a wonderful husband and two sons. She achieved so much in such a short time. The flame went out too fast.

My condolences to the family and especially to Vanessa Redgrave, whom we so enjoyed in The Year of Magical Thinking on broadway, and whose biography I have read. My parents lost their youngest child, my brother, to AIDS; he was 36. It is devastating for a parent to survive their children.

Great loss to the community.

My heart is broken for the family of Natasha Richardson who have to endure her loss.  She was always a positive light in the world, and always bettered everything she took a hand to.  Her enormous talent, her grace, her compassion, and her beauty will be sorely missed by the whole world.  Her husband, sons, mother and entire family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Words cannot express the pain and sorrow I feel for Natasha Richardson's family ...
Who will fill the loving role she played as daughter, wife and mother?  Not easy, but ...
For every AIDS activist we lose, 100 more must step forward and continue the fight in their honor.
May she rest in peace and continue to guide us from above with the style and class she always displayed.

Barbara

I want to say how sad I am for all of us.  I send my deepest sympathy for all of Natasha's family and friends.  My thoughts and prayers are with them all.

It is very sad to hear about Natasha. I loved her the first time i saw her on 'The Parent Trap'. She was an amazing women, loving mother, caring friend, best actress and had a very best place in her heart for people with AIDS and humanity. She will always be remember by all of the all.  May God give her eternal rest and may her soul rest in peace. My heart goes out for her husband, her two beautiful children and her loving family.

I'm so sorry - she was your girl, she was your mother and this was a senseless accident. I'm so sorry, I hope you can find some peace some time.

Andrea

My heart goes out to Natasha's family ... to lose a loved one so suddenly and so tragically.  So reminiscent of the early years of AIDS...when loved ones were here one day, and gone the next.

Thank you for your continued support of the pandemic that apparently has been "taken care  of."  Your family has been a great supporter.  If there is a heaven, then there will be a wonderful selection of Major Musicals to choose from as Natasha is welcomed home by her father and many fans and friends.

Stacy

My sincere condolences, may the Lord keep her family and friends strong during this time of bereavement.

Best regards,
Hilda

Natasha Richardson was a wonderful actress. I would have loved to seen her in more films and stage productions. I am glad we have known her as we did. My favorite movie she was in, is the Parent Trap. I am glad we are able to come together as fans and friends to remember the legacy she has left behind. We have lost a great advocate for AIDS. My thoughts go out to Liam Neeson, their children and Ms. Vanessa Redgrave. Thank you Natasha. You will never be forgotten.

Natasha's glorious and generous spirit still inspires; that will be her legacy. My heartfelt condolences to her husband, her sons, her mother, sister, wider family and friends. She belonged to you, but she graced us with her generosity and presence as well. A great tribute to her memory is that she left the world a better place than she found it.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Natasha and will always cherish those memories. Her laugh was contagious. Her smile lit up a room. She was so full of grace, compassion, love, talent and honesty. My thoughts and prayers are with Liam, Michael, Daniel Jack, Vanessa, Joely and the rest of the family at this tragic time. The world will not be the same without her and she will remain in our hearts forever.

Rest in Peace, Tasha. We love you and miss you.

In tragedy we sometimes come together and do brilliant things because we must find a way to go on. Around the globe there is such suffering, such injustice, and Mrs. Richardson took the time to help those in need. She lent her voice and grace to a cause that brought tragedy to her own life. And she taught us that beauty and fame mean nothing without spirit.

I had the pleasure of working with Natasha on The Handmaid's Tale. I saw her deconstruct and build her character in rehearsals - going head to toe with Pinter's screenplay.  It was magical. She was a joy on the set and I am honored to have worked with her. May God Bless your family.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Natasha Richardson. What a fantastic actress and a special, classy woman. She was a lady. Natasha was amazing in The White Countess and Evening. I am sure we would have seen more great work in the future from her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her sons, her husband Liam Neeson, and her mother Vanessa Redgrave. My heart just breaks for them and the rest of her family. I hope they will gather some strength and comfort from the many people that are thinking and praying for them.

I am hearbroken over the death of Natasha.  I considered myself a fan but she had a tendency to fly under the radar meaning she wasn't in the public eye on a daily basis but you knew she was around and would pop up on the movie screen when she found something she wanted to do.  I think that's one of the reasons this is so difficult, we won't get to see another great performance from her; look what she did in 45 years and imagine what she could have done in the future.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.  I never met her but she seemed like a beautiful person, inside and out.  She will live on in the hearts of all those who knew her and the rest of us who never had the chance but admired her all the same.

God Bless!

Life tests us often and hard, but we need to accept those trials calmly. A wonderful and beautiful wife and mother, and an extraordinary actress has left us. I hope that her husband and children will receive a lot of love and support from those close to them.  Dear Mr. Liam Neeson, I’m writing from a faraway country, Poland, but please believe me when I say that the distance has no effect on the sincerity of my condolences. It happens sometimes, especially among artists and wealthy people, that it’s hard to find true friends. However, I hope that you and your children will receive support from many true friends.

Sincerely,
Agata from Poland

I lost my brother to AIDS when it was still a "new" disease. I have learned of amfAR from Natasha Richardson's appearance on Top Chef. I have been an admirer of hers and her family for many years. So I am grateful that I can help this organization in her honor and to give thanks for her support in this endeavor and the influence that her art had on our lives. My heart goes out to her family and hope this gives some bit of comfort.

My wife Ana and I, we express our gratitude just for the fact we could live the same stage era in which she was also living because these kind of souls are not only special but unique. My wife is an actress and everyday she plays for the children in kindgarten and schools. Yesterday i heard the news on CNN and phoned her between the first and the second perfomance and she promptly decided to dedicate the last one to her. Our simpathy to Liam, Vanessa and children that lost her. Thanks for all you have done, Queeen of the Queens!

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Natasha Richardson onstage a few times; most recently in a benefit concert of A Little Night Music alongside her mother Vanessa Redgrave. Ms. Redgrave’s pride while watching her daughter perform was so apparent, as was the way they enjoyed working together.  My deepest condolences to her family, and my thanks to them and to Natasha for all that they have done in the battle against AIDS.

Ms. Richardson's work on screen will be forever preserved however, I would like to remember her for her efforts on behalf of amFar and the AIDS/HIV community. Personally, the best way for me to honor her legacy is continuing her fight for the eradiction of this horrible disease known as AIDS. I hope others will join me in the fight as we continue her legacy whlie also establishing our own.

I have a hole in my heart, a big part of me has gone with your death, my beloved Natasha ? I will ADORE you 4ever!!

Laura

My condolences to the family and friends. The one thought that keeps occurring to me is how natural it seemed that she would handle the fall and refuse the help. Her family should not accept any responsibility for her death. Women of substance fall down, get themselves up, and start taking care of everyone else again. Maybe that's what makes them so wonderful. After reading about her life I'm guessing she had few if any regrets.

Trish

I am shocked to hear the news of the tragedy that took Natasha Richardson's life.  Although I did not know much about her, I respected her work and appreciated her beauty.  Since her passing I have learned so much more about her that her loss seems even more devastating.  What an amazing human being she was to work so tirelessly for such an worthy cause.  Her memory will remain eternal and not because of her stage and film work but for her sense of compassion.

My deepest condolences to her family, husband and children who suffer a loss today that few can understand.  Our world is a much sadder place today and our hearts will remain heavy for a long time to come.  Natasha, you will be missed even by those who didn't know you.

I am very sad for this terrible accident that happens near a place where I grow up. We are never ready for accepting rapid departure of those beloved friends who have such a rich personality.  She will continue to glow in the sky, enjoying being with her father, I’m sure. She will surely stay tuned with those who are in her heart.  Rare a those, who have all these qualities that Natasha had. She will be missed greatly. Deepest sympathies especially to Liam Neeson, her sons, mother and sister.

We are supporting you with all our heart.

To the family and loved one of Ms. Richardson,

Thank you for being so generous to the world.  There are no words to describe what the loss of a loved one does to a person because the loss is such a very personal and usually private experience but you have shared your loss with the world so that we may express what Ms. Richardson meant to us.  There is no doubt we feel the loss of her life but we do not and will not feel it as keenly as you.  Please know the thoughts, prayers and well-wishes of so many people are with you during this very difficult time.

Thank you again for your graciousness and generosity.

Steffanie

So many people have said all the nicest things about this lady...  Like them, I have admired this woman for years - her work on both stage and screen, and her obvious generous heart.  There really aren't words to accurately convey my sympathy for her family and friends.  "I'm so sorry," just doesn't seem to measure up, but it's all I can say.

I know that AMFAR, and Broadway will miss this shining star, but the loss to her family is going to be indescribable.  I know - I have experienced it first-hand.  My only comfort has been that now, I have a guardian angel that watches over me, and I talk with them every day.

We must remember Ms. Richardson always, and smile at all the joy she brought to this world...

With Sympathy,

Thank you for all that you did to raise awareness.  Your service to AIDS organizations was a lesson for all of us who have been touched by this disease.  We should all do more to help others.  My heart goes out to your family.

To all the people who have come to know and cherish Natasha, I am honoured to have the opportunity to pass on my condolences to her friends and family.  She was a very beautiful and talented person and I was only fortunate to know her through television and film.  I can only imagine the kind of wonderful person she was to all who knew her personally.  I had always admired Liam and Natasha as they certainly looked like such a strong, happy couple and I’m sure, wonderful parents.  It is a tremendous loss for her two young sons.

My own father passed away very suddenly only 6 weeks ago, aged 62, and the grief is still very raw for me.  One thing I did get great comfort from is the wonderul circle of family and friends who never left my family’s side and I hope that you all take comfort from the many messages of sympathy you will receive over the weeks, months and even years to come.

Natasha will be missed. My heart goes out to her family and friends at this time. I am so sorry for their loss. I was a teenager in the 60's and was completely in love with the Redgrave sisters Brilliant actors all. I'm so sorry for their pain and  for, especially, Liam and the boys. Natasha and Liam seemed to have one of the great marriages that is very rare for celebrities. May God continue to give them strength in the days and weeks ahead. I hope it helps a little to know that so many care.
