Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)

Today, over 39 million people are living with HIV and in need of a cure. While a handful of people have been cured via stem cell transplant, this high-risk procedure is not scalable. We need a cure that works for everyone, everywhere. Not only would a cure revolutionize global health but also it could potentially save billions of dollars in treatment costs each year. amfAR scientists are on the cusp of finding such a cure, but we need your help to keep funding urgently needed research to break through the final obstacles in our path. Increasingly, donors like you are choosing to make contributions to amfAR through tax-advantaged donor-advised funds (DAFs).

DAFs are charitable giving accounts that philanthropic people set up with a custodian, typically a financial services firm. DAFs enable donors to permanently set aside a pool of assets (cash, stock, cryptocurrency, real estate, etc.) for future philanthropic gifts to their favorite nonprofits, like amfAR.

Donor-advised funds provide several benefits over direct cash donations to amfAR, including

  • Simplicity – The DAF sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
  • Flexibility – Timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision making.
  • Family legacy – A DAF is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.
  • No start-up costs – There is no cost to establish a donor-advised fund. However, there are often minimum initial charitable contributions to establish the DAF (typically $5,000 or more).
  • No transaction fees – Once approved, 100% of your recommended grant goes to amfAR.
  • Privacy if desired – Donors may choose to remain anonymous.

By giving from your donor-advised fund, you may recommend how much and how often you want to give to amfAR. Click below to designate a grant to amfAR from your DAF.

Or contact your donor-advised fund sponsor directly to request a grant distribution using amfAR ’s EIN 13-3163817, and kindly notify us of your gift at donors@amfar.org.
