LAURA W. CHEEVER, MD, SCM
Associate Administrator of the HIV/AIDS, Bureau, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
A board-certified Infectious Disease physician who provided HIV primary care for over 30 years, Dr. Cheever provides leadership and technical expertise in the administration of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program at HRSA; her priorities are ending the HIV epidemic in the United States through increasing access to HIV care, reducing health disparities, and improving outcomes; integrating substance abuse treatment into HIV care; and eliminating hepatitis C infection among co-infected patients.
“The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) has made tremendous progress in the last 13 years in increasing viral suppression and reducing disparities among people with HIV receiving medical care through the program, with viral suppression rates approaching 90%. The great opportunity in front of us is reaching the estimated 220,000 people who are diagnosed and not receiving HIV care and treatment (out of care). RWHAP providers will need to engage with new partners and develop new models of care to meet the needs of these populations in the context of constrained resources.”
