Sam’s Social Scene
Welcome to Sam’s Social Scene. In this new column for Innovations, I’ll be highlighting some of the digital influencers and social media initiatives that are helping amplify amfAR’s mission and expand its reach to new, and especially younger, audiences and potential supporters. In this issue I’m focusing on creators who are committed to amfAR’s work and have generously contributed to the success of our fundraising galas.
Chris Olsen
@chrisolsen
amfAR Gala Cannes 2022 & 2023 Livestream Host, amfAR Global Pride Ambassador 2023
Chris got his start on the social media scene in 2020 by making TikToks at home during the pandemic. Since then, his reach has skyrocketed. With a mostly Gen Z audience of over 13 million, Chris has found his niche entertaining his audiences by, well, just being himself. Since he’s a strong supporter of amfAR’s mission and an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I invited him to host amfAR’s first-ever red carpet livestream at amfAR Gala Cannes in 2022. The goal of the livestream was to educate audiences about amfAR’s work and provide an exclusive look at the red carpet of one of the most glamorous events in the world.
“Supporting amfAR means bringing awareness to the causes that amfAR is fighting for… to my generation and to generations younger than me.”
The Elevator Boys
@elevatorboys
amfAR Venezia 2022 Livestream Hosts, amfAR Paris Fashion Week Cocktail 2023 Co-Hosts
This five-piece German TikTok group-turned-boy band has a combined following of over 40 million, primarily in Europe. The amfAR Venezia red carpet livestream, which they hosted in 2022, garnered more than 54,000 views and an average watch time of over 12 minutes—a remarkable feat in a space known for short attention spans. The Elevator Boys’ willingness to collaborate, promote AIDS research, and elevate amfAR’s profile among their audience is the reason I find myself coming back to them for more projects, such as the intimate amfAR cocktail party they recently co-hosted during Paris Fashion Week.
“The work that amfAR does is incredibly important. We don’t have a cure for AIDS yet and that’s why we feel it’s necessary to support amfAR and educate our audiences.”
Boman Martinez-Reid
@bomanzier
amfAR Venezia 2023
Social Media Host
Best known for his social bits parodying the Kardashian Family, this social media powerhouse is much more than just The Bodashians. With over 2 million followers, Boman has recently signed a deal for his own show on Crave TV. The original six-episode comedy series MADE FOR TV will premiere in early 2024. His ability to bridge social media and TV content made him the perfect choice as social media host for amfAR Venezia 2023. Instead of a conventional livestream, we shifted to curated and intentional content that could live on amfAR’s Instagram grid. The approach was a hit, garnering over 1.3 million impressions across amfAR’s channels.
“Supporting amfAR is not just about charity; it’s about investing in a future where everyone can live healthy and free from the fear of HIV/AIDS. I stand with amfAR not only to fight a global health crisis but to create a world where compassion and progress go hand in hand.”
