amfAR CEO at White House Cancer Moonshot Meeting
amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost participated in a panel discussion at the White House, October 25, sponsored by the Biden Cancer Moonshot, a national effort “to end cancer as we know it.” The initiative’s mission is to reduce the deadly impact of cancer and improve patient experiences in the diagnosis, treatment, and survival of cancer.
Frost discussed insights from global health programs such as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief—PEPFAR—and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria that could be applied to the development of a new Global Cancer Fund. amfAR’s Senior Policy and Medical Advisor Dr. Susan J. Blumenthal also participated in the meeting.
“The fields of cancer and HIV are closely linked in many respects, both in the areas of biomedical research and public policy, and they can, and do, learn a great deal from one another,” Frost told Innovations. “Both the Global Fund and PEPFAR can offer invaluable lessons about what to do—and what not to do—in launching a program with the ambition, scale, and potential of a Global Cancer Fund.”
Moderated by Dr. Rifat Atun, Professor of Global Health Systems at Harvard University, the panel also featured Dr. Atul Gawande, Assistant Administrator for Global Health, USAID, and Dr. Julie Torode, Director, Union for International Cancer Control.
