The winning bidder will have the pleasure of meeting amfAR’s Honored Guest, Academy Award-Winning Actor Robert De Niro, for lunch at one of his restaurants in New York City, and the opportunity to take home a special piece of De Niro family history.

Robert De Niro Sr. was part of the celebrated New York School of post-war American artists. His work blended abstract and expressionist styles of painting with traditional representational subject matter, bridging the divide between European Modernism and Abstract Expressionism. Born in 1922 in Syracuse, New York, he burst onto the New York art scene in the mid 1940s along with a generation of prominent abstract artists and remained active until his death in 1993. His art was exhibited at Peggy Guggenheim’s renowned Art of This Century Gallery in New York, the leading gallery for established European modernists and the emerging Abstract Expressionists. De Niro’s work has been exhibited alongside the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Willlem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, among others.

De Niro first turned to landscape while living in Paris and the Pyrenees in the early 1960s. He returned to the genre during summers he spent working in Provincetown and the Hamptons in the late 1960s, and once more a decade later during the two years he lived in San Francisco. View from My Window, St. Juste, Chevalet, France, signed and dated by the artist, exemplifies his personal experience looking out onto the scene of the town from a visit to the French countryside in 1963.
